New resource highlights dangerous cocktail ingredients
A new website dedicated to highlighting dangerous ingredients in cocktails has launched after receiving a funding boost from the Tales of the Cocktail Foundation.
Cocktail Safe includes 60 pages of information about potentially dangerous ingredients
Cocktail Safe was created by drinks writer and educator Camper English and has been developed to help home and professional bartenders make safer drinks.
English said: “For several years, a few members of the global mixology community have been discussing unsafe practices and ingredients used in production of cocktails, mostly in private groups on social media.
“Cocktail Safe is meant to be an easy-to-find public repository of information to assist bartenders in making better-informed choices to keep their customers and themselves safe.”
Cocktail Safe, which currently focuses on US regulations, provides information and advice on regulated ingredients such as quinine and wormwood, as well as prohibited ingredients like tobacco, tonka beans, and raw sassafras.
The online resource also includes advice about potentially dangerous techniques and equipment, including liquid nitrogen, fat-washing and the use of vintage glassware.
The site has launched with more than 60 pages of information and hundreds of ingredients explored. Cocktail Safe remains a work-in-progress and will be continually updated with additional ingredients, techniques and legislation for other countries around the world.
The website launched on 8 February and can be accessed at cocktailsafe.org.
