TTB plans new rules for US alcohol labels
By Nicola CarruthersThe US government’s Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau (TTB) is proposing that spirits, wine and beer labels include nutritional and allergen information.

In its February 2022 report, Competition in the Markets for Beer, Wine, and Spirits, the US Department of the Treasury recommended the TTB start rule-making for the labelling of wines, spirits, and malt-based beverages with allergen and per-serving alcohol, calorie and nutrient content.
The TTB published two notices of its proposed rule-making online on 17 January that would require allergens to be disclosed (Notice No. 238) and ‘alcohol facts’ (Notice No. 237) to be included on the labels of beer, wines and spirits.
In Notice No. 237, the TTB is recommending that producers include the serving size of the product, the number of servings per container, alcohol content as a percentage of ABV, the number of fluid ounces of pure ethyl alcohol per serving, the number of calories per serving, and the number of grams per serving of carbohydrates, fat, and protein.
The proposed rules are open to comments for 90 days from the date TTB published the notices.
A similar move has also been considered in other countries, including the UK.
Earlier this month, the TTB officially recognised American single malt as a whiskey category, after more than two years of consideration and significant lobbying by a trade body.
