Glengoyne releases 38YO Russell Family Cask
Highland distillery Glengoyne has unveiled a limited edition 38-year-old single malt as the second chapter of its Russell Family Cask trilogy.
The rare single malt celebrates three generations of the Russell family as custodians of Glengoyne Distillery, which has been owned by Ian Macleod Distillers since 2003.
The trilogy was inspired by a dram from a cask number 915, which Leonard Russell shared over lunch with his father Peter, and son Tom. The whisky was unanimously chosen to be bottled and released due to its unique characteristics.
Matured for nearly four decades in a single first-fill American Sherry oak butt, the new 38-year-old single cask release pays homage to the original Sherried style that has become Glengoyne’s signature.
Offered at 56.8% ABV, the whisky displays aromas of rich toffee, blackberry tart and hints of floral honey on the nose, followed on the palate by notes of dark chocolate, fresh strawberries with cream, tiramisu and ginger.
Released as the second chapter of the Russell Family trilogy, the single malt expression is limited to only 241 bottles worldwide and has an RRP of £4,000 (US$5,078).
Tom Russell, head of international business development at Glengoyne Distillery and fourth generation of the Russell Family, said: “We are first and foremost a family business, and growing up for me was full of family dinners with conversation flowing, quick wit and healthy debates and The Russell Cask Trilogy brings this to life.
“The 38-year-old is a remarkable dram, and we had no doubt we needed to bottle it. The series is a special part of our past, but releasing it is raising a glass to our future and continuing to create exceptional whisky from one of the most environmentally friendly distilleries in Scotland.”
The first chapter in the Russell Family single cask series, a 36-year-old single malt, was released in 2021. The whisky was drawn from a cask number 1549, offered at 50.7% ABV and limited to 402 bottles.
Earlier this year, Glengoyne launched its new White Oak range matured in American first-fill Bourbon and virgin oak casks and unveiled the 10th batch of its limited edition Teapot Dram series.
