Zum Barbarossa opens in London
Following a launch in Amsterdam in 2022, speakeasy bar Zum Barbarossa opened in London’s Soho last week (24 October).
The venue is also from the family behind The Seafood Bar on Dean Street.
The basement bar will offer cocktails and late-night entertainment, including live DJs with a sound system provided by L-Acoustics.
Cocktails include a Spicy Rose Paloma, which blends Patrón Tequila, rose, habanero and grapefruit soda; and a Tommy’s Spicy Mezcalita, made with Verde Amaras mezcal, lime, agave, chilli rock salt, dried cricket, ‘Mexican powder’ and lime.
Other options include a Hot Honey Highball, Banana & Pineapple Daiquiri and Zespresso Martini.
The bar also offers small plates, including caviar with blinis, crème fraîche, shallots and chives; dressed oysters with passionfruit lime oil dressing; and truffle and Parmesan chips.
The bar’s name is inspired by the Amsterdam site, which dates to 1900 and features a mosaic with the name on the entrance to its cellar. The mosaic also features a fruit tree with two clovers, as seen on playing cards, which was a symbol of the former beer cellar’s illegal gambling parties.
Interior design studio Marie Martin created the design of both venues, inspired by the art nouveau movement of the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
Co-founder Pep de Visscher said: “Zum Barbarossa is taking its first steps outside of Amsterdam to London’s Soho and we couldn’t be more excited. Our London speakeasy will have a similar feel to the original bar but will encompass the spirit of the city’s buzzing nightlife.”
In other Soho news, Milroy’s reopened as 3 Greek Street earlier this month.
