Macallan miniatures expected to fetch £250,000

The world’s largest collection of vintage-dated single malt whiskies from one brand is expected to sell for more than £250,000 (US$325,266) when it goes under the hammer at Whisky.Auction next week.

The 44 miniature bottles of The Macallan from the brand’s Fine & Rare collection will be sold as one single compilation in Whisky.Auction’s biannual Miniatures, Books & Memorabilia auction, which will close on Tuesday 22 October 2024 at 7:30pm BST.

Macallan Fine & Rare was first launched as a series in 2002, providing serious collectors with the opportunity to purchase vintage whisky distilled over the course of eight different decades.

The Macallan 1926, bottled in 1986, served as inspiration for the collection’s branding, and was incorporated into the series, with 37 bottles comprising the first release and more added at various times over the last 20 years.

The rare miniature versions, which have been made available for most of the bottlings in the series, have become particularly sought after by collectors looking to add every vintage to their whisky cabinet.

Gemma de Jesus, head of Whisky.Auction, said: “We’re delighted to be selling this rare collection of miniatures from The Macallan Fine and Rare Series.

“As the only specialist whisky auction house with a regular dedicated miniatures auction, we understand how passionate whisky collectors are about these mini bottles that represent shifts in whisky trends throughout history, and provide tiny pieces of liquid history to whisky lovers worldwide.”

Scott Walker, head of valuations for Whisky.Auction, added: “This is a really rare chance to own a set of Macallan spanning across the 20th century with pre-WWII distillate from the 1930s through every decade up to the 1990s.

“Macallan did not bottle vintages themselves until 1984, making the work to trace liquid that was distilled throughout the last 100 years an impressive feat for the team at the distillery, resulting in bottles extremely highly sought after by collectors.”

The Whisky.Auction Miniatures & Memorabilia Auction began on Sunday 13 October and comprises more than 640 lots, including rare Karuizawa miniatures, historic advertising prints from world famous brands, and much more. Bid registration can be found at www.whisky.auction/account/registration.

In 2022, a miniature bottle of Springbank 1919 50 Years Old set a new auction record for the brand after selling for £7,360 (US$9,605) in the Miniatures, Books & Memorabilia auction.

In November 2023, The Macallan ‘Adami’ 1926 set a new world record and became the most expensive whisky sold at auction.
