Bosque plants trees in Patagonia
By Miona MadsenArgentinian brand Bosque Gin has embarked on its second reforestation journey this year in its native Patagonia.
Bosque, meaning ‘forest’ in Spanish, has been planting native trees every season since 2020 in partnership with non-governmental organisation Reforestarg.
Reforestarg has been planting forests in Patagonia since 2017. Last year, the project successfully planted 100,000, with the plan for 2024 to plant 150,000 new trees.
Tobías Merlo, director of Reforestarg, said: “After a four-month journey through Patagonia, seeing the burned forests inspired me to create a space where people can serve the land. Reforestarg is a place where people can be of service to the forests.
“My message is that if you want to change the world, this isn’t the place. But if you want to change yourself so that the world around you begins to transform, this is the place.”
This month, Bosque returned to the burned forest of Cholila in Chubut, Argentina, for its second reforestation journey of the year with Reforestarg. The gin brand draws ‘inspiration and guidance from the rhythm of nature’.
With a forecast of four days of snow, rain and freezing temperatures, the team was challenged physically and logistically, forcing them to pause the planting plans.
Mercedes Buey Fernández, commercial director of Reforestarg, said: “It was a very special camp. Nature taught us to adapt and be flexible in such a challenging context. Thankfully, the volunteers understood everything; their spirit really impressed me. And as a team, we gained invaluable lessons from having to make constant decisions.”
The goal of planting 4,000 trees wasn’t met, but Bosque will continue gathering volunteers, companies, and friends to work together to support native trees.
The brand’s first expression, Bosque Alta Montaña, was born from the first reforestation. Inspired by Cerro Dos Picos mountain – the highest point in Chubut – the gin is designed to warm the body and celebrate the spirit of exploration.
Bosque Gin received its B Corp status in April 2022.
