Mile High sends whiskey barrel to space
Denver distillery Mile High Spirits has partnered with aerospace company World View to send a barrel of its Fireside Whiskey into the stratosphere.
“We’ve always been fascinated by the science behind the distilling process and how different factors can affect the flavour of our whiskey,” said Wyn Ferrell, owner of Mile High Spirits. “Our stratospheric whiskey defies gravity, transcending tradition. It beckons us to explore beyond the ordinary, to taste the universe itself.”
The brand claims its Strato Whiskey is the first product sent to the stratosphere that is commercially available to the public.
The whiskey was launched at 7.03am on 15 July from Page, Arizona, experiencing near-vacuum conditions and temperatures as low as -60℃.
Mile High believe the change in temperatures will encourage additional interaction between the whiskey and the barrel, ‘increasing the richness of flavour and complexity’.
Only 500 50ml bottles of Strato Whiskey, offered at 53% ABV, are available exclusively from the distillery’s on-site shop (US$300) and website (US$350).
The distillery is not the first to experiment with whiskey in space. The Glenlivet sent barley seeds into space in May 2021 on a Space X rocket, while Ardbeg launched a vial of whisky into outer space in 2011 to test the effects of gravity on the maturation process.
