Franklin & Sons reveals Flavour in Motion winner
Independent drinks brand Franklin & Sons has announced the winner of its first national cocktail competition, Flavour in Motion.
Franklin & Sons has crowned Elyse Von Ruinn from Charlie Brown’s in Glasgow of the inaugural cocktail competition with their cocktail Flip & Sip. In addition to the title, Von Ruinn took home a £3,000 (US$3,830) cash prize.
“Winning the Flavour in Motion competition by presenting a drink that so profoundly represented my bartending journey was a very special moment for me. Even more so because I was alongside nice outrageously talented and interesting bartenders. This competition let us delve into each other’s roots and ultimately led to a very affirming and relationship-building day together at Dram,” said Von Ruinn.
Runners-ups Mike Bower from Burnt Milk Hotel in Liverpool and Ashley Haines from the Bournemouth-based bar Ojo Rojo were given £250 (US$320) and £150 (US$190), respectively.
The competition invited bartenders from across the country to reimagine their debut cocktail from when they first entered the industry.
Competitors were judged on their reimagination, storytelling, and the consumer appeal of their cocktails.
James Stimson, senior brand manager at Franklin & Sons, said: “It’s been fantastic, from the entry response to witnessing the level of talent we have in the industry. As a brand, we wanted to give back to the individuals who are the heart and soul of hospitality, and we hope that Elyse can explore their passions and interests, with the help of the prize.
“Von Ruinn’s choice of cocktail poked fun at current trends while also celebrating them. Using our Pineapple & Almond soda in such an unexpected way took the judges completely by surprise. The cocktail without the little isomalt bowl of olive VK reduction was fantastic, but when that final little extra blue surprise was poured, it lifted the drink into another stratosphere. It culminated in a truly inspired version of their first cocktail, the Cheeky Vimto.”
Franklin & Sons’ drinks were first introduced in 1886, and today the brand has an extensive product range, including tonic waters, flavoured tonic waters, soft drinks and sodas.
Global Brands, owner of Franklin & Sons, was awarded two Master, three Gold and three Silver medals at 2024 Tonic & Mixer Masters.
