Crossroads team pens first cocktail book
The pair behind London’s Crossroads bar, Bart Miedeksza and Valentino Girotto, have co-authored a book centred around carbonation.
Titled Bubbles: A Guide to Carbonated Cocktails, the 300-page book is a comprehensive guide on mastering the art of crafting carbonated cocktails.
Within its pages, topics such as pressure, time, sugars, alcohol content, glass impact and bubble shape are addressed, drawn from Crossroads owner Miedeksza and bar manager Girotto’s years of research and practical knowledge of the subject.
The book aims to equip bartenders with the know-how to perfect carbonation, so they can apply it in their bars.
The book was edited by drinks writer and winner of the Alan Lodge Award 2022 Millie Milliken and contains a foreword written by US bartender and author Jeffrey Morgenthaler. Morgenthaler is cited as the man who ‘opened the conversation on proper carbonation almost 15 years ago’, as well as inspiring Crossroads’ original concept.
On why they are launching the book, Miedeksza and Girotto explained: “We’ve spent years refining our techniques and discovering the nuances of carbonation. We feel the industry is ready for this next step in cocktail innovation, making it an opportune time to release the book.
“Our aim is to provide a detailed, practical guide that demystifies carbonation. We’re excited to empower bartenders to experiment and elevate their craft with everything they can learn from the book.”
Located in East London’s Newington Green neighbourhood, Crossroads was founded in 2020 by Miedeksza. Together with Girotto, he was studying the process of carbonation ‘long before’ the bar’s launch.
This includes exploring everything from the impact of different kinds of sugars to aromatic compounds and bubble size. The pair say the topic has ‘never been covered to this extent’.
The book will be available worldwide on the bar’s website and at the bar itself from 12 August, for either £29.95/US$38) (hardcover) or £17.99/US$23 (ebook).
In other bar news, the Cambridge Public House recently achieved B Corp certification. The venue’s co-owner Hugo Gallou talked us through the process and explained why others should follow in their footsteps.
