Templeton blends whiskey with Port
By Miona MadsenMidnight Rye, the latest release from Iowa-based Templeton distillery, is an American rye blended with Port.
The expression blends sourced straight rye whiskies with a mash bill of 95% rye and 5% malted barley, and is aged in virgin American oak barrels.
Instead of ageing the whiskey in wine casks, the new release has been blended with ‘a subtle touch of premium dark Port wine’ for extra texture and complexity.
On the nose, the Midnight Rye offers aromas of ‘dark cherries, figs and a subtle hint of spiced orange peel’, followed on the palate by ‘cinnamon, clove and a touch of dark chocolate’.
“At Templeton, our relentless pursuit of pushing boundaries and fostering innovation is what propels us forward,” said Shane Fitzharris, commercial senior vice president at Infinium Spirits.
“The debut of Templeton Midnight Rye defines this exhilarating era of creativity. Even as we look towards a future where all our liquid
originates directly from Templeton Distillery, we remain dedicated to providing endless possibilities and experimenting with new tastes and flavours. This commitment elevates the whiskey-drinking experience to new heights and embodies our passion for excellence.”
The rye can be enjoyed neat, on the rocks or mixed in a classic cocktail such as Manhattan.
Bottled at 45% ABV, Templeton Midnight Rye is now available in the US with a retail price of US$39.99 (€37).
Earlier this year, Templeton released its inaugural Bourbon, the first whiskey produced entirely at the Iowa distillery, which opened in 2018.
Templeton whiskey is distributed by California-based Infinium Spirits, whose portfolio includes Zaya Rum, Torres Brandy and Seagram’s vodka.
