The rum brand has been mastering its craft since 1890

For 130 years, encompassing five family generations, Flor de Caña has built a name for itself as one of the most iconic ultra-premium rum producers in the world, led by its unwavering commitment to quality and its expert craftsmanship. Today, it also stands at the pinnacle of sustainable rum making, and is regarded as one of the most planet-friendly distilleries.

The story dates back in 1875, when young Italian Alfredo Francisco Pellas Canessa travelled to the tropical country of Nicaragua in search of adventure. In 1890, he came across the most fertile lands at the base of the country’s tallest and most active volcano, San Cristóbal, and decided it would be the perfect location in which to establish a rum distillery, marking the start of Flor de Caña.

In honour of its traditions, Flor de Caña rums are still aged in hand-assembled Bourbon barrels for up to 30 years to obtain their exceptionally smooth flavour.

A signature mark of these rums is that they are naturally aged, without sugar, artificial ingredients, or additives of any kind. The result is a portfolio of finely aged sipping rums that has received the industry’s top accolades, including being named Global Rum Producer of the Year by the International Wine and Spirit Competition in London in 2017.

Care for the environment

Sustainability has always been a core value of Flor de Caña, being passed down through the five family generations that have led the company during its 130 years of existence. This commitment means taking care of the environment, employees and the community every step of the production process, without cutting corners.

Carbon Neutral

Flor de Caña is the world’s first spirit to be both carbon neutral and certified as Fair Trade. In other words: the brand offsets all carbon emissions during its entire lifecycle, from field to market. It also means the rum is produced in compliance with more than 300 rigorous labour, social, and environmental standards. This has been accomplished thanks to programmes like distilling the rum with 100% renewable energy, capturing all CO2 emissions during the fermentation process, planting one million trees since 2005 and several community outreach programmes.

The brand is recognised as a global leader in sustainability, receiving distinctions such as Green Distillery of the Year (Caribbean), Ethical Award (UK), and Best Sustainable Rum Distillery (US).
