Elephant Gin opens distillery
B Corp-certified Elephant Gin has opened a new distillery and visitor centre in Wittenberg, Germany, which will expand its production capacity.
The ‘state-of-the-art’ distillery, based in Wittenberg on the outskirts of Hamburg, allows the producer to meet ‘growing demand’ for its gin.
The new facility uses energy-efficient methods and sustainably sourced ingredients in line with the brand’s green goals.
Tours and ‘immersive’ experiences will also be on offer, enabling guests to experience the distillation process, botanical selection and bottle their own gin.
The site will also house an Arnold Holstein copper still, rotary evaporators and other ‘high-end’ distillery equipment to allow it to experiment and collaborate with bartenders and chefs on the development of ‘innovative’ products.
The facility also includes an African-inspired bar and a garden where herbs and botanicals are grown.
The B-Corp certified brand was founded in 2013 by couple Robin and Tessa Gerlach, who wanted to create a gin inspired by their adventures in Africa.
The gin has been produced at a facility located an hour outside of Hamburg.
The new distillery, which was due to open in spring 2023, faced delays due to the pandemic over the past few years.
“This has truly been a labour of love,” said Robin Gerlach. “We set out on this ambitious project over three years ago and we are incredibly proud to finally open the doors to our new distillery.
“The goal was to create a home for Elephant Gin that truly reflected our values – passion, handcrafted, care and transparency.
“We also wanted to create an immersive experience for visitors that allowed people to touch, smell and create for themselves.
“We are so excited for the future and to welcome guests to Germany from all over the world.”
Tessa Gerlach said the opening marks a “significant milestone” for the brand.
“We’re excited to welcome guests to immerse themselves in the Elephant Gin experience, learn about our conservation efforts and, of course, taste our exceptional gins,” she added.
Since the brand’s inception, 15% of bottle profits have been donated to elephant conservation projects in Africa.
