English producer York Gin has launched a month-long campaign to educate consumers about Old Tom gin.

The Yorkshire-based gin company has produced a pamphlet about the history of Old Tom gin, with further information about its flavour and recommended serves.

Adam Cook, York Gin’s head of sales, said: “When we were at the London Junipalooza gin festival in June, it struck me that even massive gin fans didn’t really know what Old Tom actually is. Apart from its association with cats, there is definitely a knowledge gap.

“As makers of a great Old Tom, it struck me that we could do a great job educating people about this style of gin.

“Old Tom appeared way before London Dry and can be a fabulous style of gin to enjoy,” he added.

Traditionally associated with the ‘gin craze’ of the early 18th century, Old Tom gin is said to have gone out of fashion in the early 20th century with the arrival of London Dry.

York Gin will spend August running Old Tom classes for its trade partners, while also giving customers in their shops ‘the lowdown’ on the gin variety.

The campaign will run for the whole of the month, starting 1 August, otherwise known as Yorkshire Day.

Cook added: “Hayman’s of London kick-started modern interest in Old Tom gin after it found a family recipe from the 19th century. And now several top Old Tom gins are available. We’re keen for people to know there’s a really delicious world of gins beyond London Dry and flavoured gin.’

Customers who buy a large bottle of York Gin Old Tom will receive a complimentary Old Tom booklet.

Last year, York Gin unveiled plans to open a three-floor visitor attraction in the city’s Coppergate shopping centre.
