Ian Macleod applies to build warehouses
Scotch maker Ian Macleod Distillers (IMD) has submitted a planning application to build a whisky storage warehouse complex.
The whisky storage warehouse scheme would be located at Bandeath Industrial Estate, Throsk, in Scotland. The application was sent to Stirling Council.
The development would include a complex of nine whisky storage warehouses, a blend centre associated to a tank farm, and a ‘well-equipped’ office building. The proposed site covers 20.2 acres.
Leonard Russell, managing director, IMD, said: “The new facility will further secure our spirit supply chain and have a clear beneficial impact on both the local and the national economy.
“The new storage complex will provide considerable benefits to the community, delivering employment both in its construction and once complete. We have also given a commitment to promoting apprenticeship opportunities.
“With our broad commitment to addressing climate change and delivering net zero, our new facility will be highly sustainable and have minimum environmental impact.
“We have undertaken extensive engagement with the local community throughout this process and look forward to continue to engage with them as matters progress.”
The warehouses would age casks from all IMD distilleries in Scotland: Rosebank in Falkirk, Glengoyne in Stirlingshire, and Tamdhu in Knockando, Speyside.
Blended and aged whisky would then be moved by road tanker to IMD’s bottling facility in Broxburn.
Construction of the complex is anticipated to create 62 jobs, and apprenticeships will be offered both during the build and in the completed development – thought to be able to create upwards of 25 full-time-equivalent jobs.
Last November, The Spirits Business interviewed Gordon Dundas, brand development and advocacy director at Ian Macleod Distillers.
That same month, the company released a limited edition blended Scotch in collaboration with students at Heriot-Watt University.
