Micil Distillery is Galway’s only operational distillery, producing the city’s first whiskey in more than a century.

Andrew Coates, co-founder of Bright Drinks, said: “We are incredibly excited to be working with Micil Distillery to build their sales in the UK on- and off-trade.

“With listings in some iconic venues such as Bar 1661 and The Temple Bar in Dublin, as well as Celtic Whiskey Shop and Cavavin Wine Merchants, we know the UK drinks industry is going to be excited to get hold of these small batch, lovingly crafted Irish spirits.”

Production at the distillery is headed up by brothers Pádraic and Jimín Ó Griallais, sixth generation poitín distillers and direct descendants of Micil Mac Chearra, the family’s original distiller.

Pádraic Ó Griallais commented: “We’re extremely proud to be inviting more people to join the Micil family, and to support the growth of craft Irish spirits, and are excited to be embarking on this journey with Bright Drinks in the UK.”

The distillery’s portfolio includes gin made with wild flowers and herbs from Connemara on Ireland’s west coast; poitín produced with 100% Irish malted grain; and whiskey created using local peat.

Micil’s Irish cream liqueur is made using the brothers’ grandmother’s recipe.

Sophie Caley, head of marketing, Bright Drinks, added: “Micil Distillery are distillers at heart, with a commitment to honouring Irish distilling traditions, whilst driving the category forward to engage with modern drinkers; for instance their Irish cream is the first to be made with poitín.

“Their deep-rooted passion for their locality sees them using wild Connemara flowers and herbs in their gins and 100% Irish malted grain in their poitín and local peat from the family farm in their whiskey making. These are small batch Irish spirits at their best.”

The Micil range is currently available to trade customers through Dayla Drinks, Inn Express, and Master of Malt.

The portfolio will be available for sampling at the Northern Restaurant & Bar Show in Manchester, UK, on 14-15 March on the Bright Drinks stand.
