Spirit Master: Aczu Gin

Spain was the source of inspiration for Aczu Gin, which collected the top accolade in this year’s Gin Masters blind tasting. We delve deeper into the brand.

Master winner: Aczu Gin

Jen and Manuel Aczualdez are the brains behind award-winning Aczu Gin. The founders became enamoured with gin years ago in Spain and spent more than three years perfecting the recipe of the gin.

In the first instalment of The Gin Masters blind tasting earlier this year, Aczu Gin impressed the judges and secured a Master medal.

The spirit is made at the brand’s distillery in the farming region of Chipiona, in the southern part of Spain.

The gin is created with 11 botanicals: clove, cardamom, orange and lemon peels, cinnamon, coriander, angelica, hibiscus, orange blossom, liquorice and juniper.

Each one was chosen because Spanish locals have used these ingredients in cooking, drinks, and medicine for centuries.

Aczu Gin uses a high-quality grain alcohol base that has been distilled six times for macerating the 11 botanicals for five days.

The liquid is then left to rest for seven months, to breathe and open naturally, before being bottled at 47% ABV. Tasting notes include citrus and spice.

During the blind tasting, Melita Kiely, editor of The Spirits Business and chair of The Global Spirits Masters, said of the gin: “This gin has a lovely texture, los of juniper, some cinnamon spice and herbaceous notes come through on the palate. The higher ABV is well integrated into the product.”

Aczu Gin is part of the Drink Good Spirits portfolio of spirits and is available for US$39.99 via the Aczu Gin website: aczugin.com.
