Bourbon auction to support flood victims

The Kentucky Distillers’ Association (KDA) will host a Bourbon auction to raise funds to aid rebuilding efforts following flash flooding in eastern Kentucky.

The KDA has teamed up with the Bourbon Crusaders charitable organisation and whiskey writer Fred Minnick to host a fundraising effort to support those affected by the catastrophic floods.

They previously collaborated to host the Kentucky Bourbon Benefit in December 2021, which raised US$3.4 million to help communities affected by the tornado outbreak in Kentucky.

At least 37 people have died in flash floods in eastern Kentucky that began in August.

To support those affected by the flooding, the Kentucky Bourbon Benefit will return with a 10-day online auction of exclusive private barrel selection experiences, rare and vintage spirits, and unique tasting and tourism offerings from the state’s distilling industry, and hospitality and charitable partners.

“We prayed that we’d never have to get this group together again in the face of disaster, but our friends, families and neighbours in eastern Kentucky are braving through unspeakable tragedy and devastation,” KDA president Eric Gregory said. “It’s our duty as a signature industry to help.

“We were so impressed and humbled by the outpouring of support for western Kentucky, and we hope that Bourbon aficionados and bidders show the same unparalleled generosity for the thousands of eastern Kentucky residents who desperately need our assistance.”

KDA members are offering private barrel experiences where Bourbon enthusiasts can taste and select their own barrel. Each barrel usually yields 150-200 bottles depending on age and proof.

“Kentucky’s Bourbon industry was there for our western Kentucky families following the tornadoes, making the single largest donation to that relief fund – and now I am proud to see this industry stepping up once again to support our western Kentucky families affected by the devastating flooding,” Kentucky governor Andy Beshear added.

“I know this will make a tremendous impact for our people and I am grateful for the continued support.”

The online auction will begin on 11 August at 12pm EST and run until 21 August at 11 pm EST. Head to www.kybourbonbenefit.com to view auction items and bid.

All proceeds will go directly to the state’s official Team Eastern Kentucky Flood Relief Fund to help those affected by flooding.
