The expansion will see the creation of a site located across nine acres in the city of Bristol in Sullivan County, Tennessee.

The facility will include the build of an automated distillery, specialising in highly automated distilling and packaging.

The distillery’s new headquarters will also house a museum highlighting the history of Tennessee whiskey, Nascar, music and the distilling process.

Once complete, the 35,000-square-foot facility is anticipated to be the fourth-largest automated plant in Tennessee.

The new location will join Tennessee Hills Distillery’s two existing operations in Jonesborough and Johnson City, both in Tennessee.

The project is expected to create 45 new jobs over the next five years, doubling the company’s headcount in North East Tennessee.

Tennessee Hills Distillery founder Stephen Callahan said: “We are so grateful for the support Tennessee Hill Distillery has received the last eight years enabling us to grow into a super-regional brand.

“Our mission is building something all Tennesseans can be proud of. It is an honour to join the Bristol and Sullivan County business communities to grow manufacturing and ‘experiential’ tourism in the region.”

Founded in Tennessee’s oldest town Jonesborough, Tennessee Hills Distillery is a subsidiary of Rugged American Spirits.

The company previously teamed up with East Tennessee State University to create a brewing and distillation sciences programme.

The US state has seen several new investments in distilleries in the past year.

The ex-master distiller of Jack Daniel’s, Jeff Arnett, opened a distillery last month as part of a US$20m investment in Tennessee’s whiskey industry. It is the first of three Tennessee facilities planned by Arnett’s Company Distilling.

Last summer, American whiskey brand Uncle Nearest purchased 53 acres for US$2.1m to expand its distillery in Shelbyville, Tennessee.
