Zacapa 23 El Alma is the second bottling to be introduced as part of the Guatemalan brand’s four-part Heavenly Cask collection.

The range kicked off in April 2021 with the release of Zacapa 23 La Doma – The Taming Cask, which was matured in barrels that used to hold American whiskeys, Sherry and Pedro Ximénez wines.

Lorena Vásquez, Zacapa’s master blender, said: “Each of the Heavenly Cask collection celebrate one of the cask types that have been used to age Zacapa 23 by additionally ageing and emphasising the extraordinary taste sensations they individually create.”

El Alma, meaning ‘the soul’ in Spanish, is named after the charred ex-American whiskey cask used during Zacapa’s ‘sistema solera’ ageing process.

The new bottling is a blend of aged reserve rums from six to 24 years old that have experienced additional ageing in the ex-whiskey cask. The resulting liquid has hints of roasted almonds, cinnamon and sweet toffee.

The 40% ABV rum is recommended served neat or over a large ice cube. It can also be garnished with toasted walnuts, and paired with smoked ham or beef, or Gouda cheese with orange or peach jam.

Zacapa 23 El Alma has an RRP of £75 (US$103) per 700ml bottle. It will be available in select markets from November including Italy, Spain, France, Germany, Switzerland, Benelux, Nordics, Czech Republic, Guatemala and Panama, among others.
