SGWS to distribute Canopy Growth CBD drinks in US
By Nicola CarruthersConstellation Brands-backed cannabis firm Canopy Growth Corporation has appointed Southern Glazer’s Wine & Spirits (SGWS) as its distributor in the US for CBD-infused drinks.
The biggest wine and spirits distributor in the US will distribute Canopy Growth’s CBD-based beverages, starting with its new CBD-infused sparkling water brand Quatreau, in seven states. Additional states will follow in the coming months.
The low-calorie Quatreau sparkling water range contains 20mg of US-grown hemp-based CBD. It is available in four flavours: cucumber and mint, passionfruit and guava, blueberry and acai, and ginger and lime.
SGWS will offer the Quatreau range through its commercial infrastructure, including its e-commerce platform Proof.
SGWS said Canopy Growth is one of the first US CBD-based drinks producers to gain access to a ‘nationwide network of a large-scale alcohol distributor’.
Julious Grant, chief commercial officer at Canopy Growth, said: “Through this groundbreaking partnership, we will leverage Southern Glazer’s established distribution network to bring our CBD beverage portfolio to retailers and consumers across the US market.
“The leadership team at Southern Glazer’s shares our values, priorities, and future-forward view of the category. Together, we are committed to creating an immediate strategic route to market for Canopy’s premium CBD beverages.”
The deal is said to showcase the benefits of the company’s strategic relationship with Svedka vodka owner Constellation Brands.
“This agreement reinforces our consumer-focused approach to identifying emerging growth areas where we can add value for our customers,” said David Chaplin, chief growth officer, SGWS.
“There is strong consumer interest in the CBD-infused beverage category and our distribution network is uniquely positioned to deliver the most efficient and effective route to market for CBD suppliers and retail customers.
“We’re proud to align with Canopy Growth, a company well positioned to lead this product category with a portfolio of premium, highly desirable consumer brands.”
Zero-sugar Quatreau is priced at RRP US$3.99 per 12oz (340ml) can. The range was rolled out in Canada last year, where it is now the top-selling ready-to-drink CBD-based drink.
In May 2020, Constellation Brands purchased an additional 5.1% stake in Canopy Growth for CA$245 million (US$173m).
Canopy Growth has received billions of dollars in investment from High West Whiskey owner Constellation Brands since 2017.
