Lakes Distillery unveils Port cask-finished whisky
By Nicola CarruthersCumbria’s The Lakes Distillery has released a single malt matured in Port casks as the first expression in its new Whiskymaker’s Editions range.
The Whiskymaker’s Editions Colheita is bottled at 52% ABV
The Whiskymaker’s Editions Colheita is the first whisky to launch as part of the limited edition range, which showcases whiskymaker Dhavall Gandhi’s adventurous side in maturation and blending.
Each bottling in the new range aims to create “outstanding flavours” and explores an “alternative side” to The Lakes single malt range.
“The Whiskymaker’s Editions is an intentional deviation from our house style, created to showcase a different personality of The Lakes single malt,” said Gandhi.
“This particular expression has been designed to be a little more fun, fruity and easy to drink and, as a limited edition, is perfect for anyone who appreciates The Lakes’ house style but wants to experience and explore the other side of The Lakes single malt.”
The new expression is made with Colheita Port, an aged tawny Port made exclusively of grapes from a single vintage.
To make the whisky, the Colheita Port casks were accompanied by a very small amount of Bourbon barrels to “enhance and contrast certain flavour characteristics”.
The resulting liquid offers a nose with hints of Santa Rosa plums, pickled cherries and candied orange while the “complex” palate brings notes of prunes, stewed plums and warming cinnamon leading to a creamy mouthfeel and lasting finish.
Gandhi added that additional expressions in the new range will follow.
Bottled at 52% ABV, The Whiskymaker’s Editions Colheita is non-chill-filtered and limited to 5,400 bottles. It is priced at £65 (US$87) per 700ml bottle and available to buy from The Lakes Distillery’s website.
