The bottle had been estimated to sell for between £10,000 (US$12,500) and £13,000 (US$16,300).

It was bottle number 216 of 732. The whisky was matured in three Bourbon casks and was named White Bourbon due its “unusually light colour”. It is said to have aromas of tropical fruits and notes of pine, vanilla and honey on the palate.

Martin Green, Bonhams whisky specialist in Edinburgh, said: “We’re very pleased at the results which were strong across the board.

“It was encouraging to see such spirited bidding in the new ‘live behind closed doors’ format we have introduced to meet the challenges posed by the current situation. Clearly, the appetite for collecting whisky is undimmed.”

Other sale highlights included a bottle of The Macallan 1938, which reached its sales estimate (£9,000-£11,000/ US$11,300-US$13,750) with a closing bid of £9,760.

A bottle of Black Bowmore 1964 The First Edition, bottled in 1993, fetched £6,100 (US$7,600), while a bottle of The Prestonfield 22 Years Old 1965 was bought for £5,490 (US$6,900).
