Johnnie Walker celebrates Jim Beveridge with rare blend
By Melita KielyDiageo has unveiled a Johnnie Walker bottling made from eight “exceptionally rare” whiskies to commemorate master blender Jim Beveridge’s 40 years in the whisky industry.
Only 398 bottles of Johnnie Walker Master’s Ruby Reserve has been createdBeveridge selected the eight whiskies used to make Johnnie Walker Master’s Ruby Reserve, all of which are at least 40 years old.
John Williams, Johnnie Walker global brand director, said: “Jim is a giant of our industry and we wanted to make sure we marked this milestone with a truly special whisky.
“It was a pleasure to ask Jim to craft a Scotch that paid tribute to those whiskies that have left an indelible mark on his career.”
With an ABV of 43%, only 398 bottles of Johnnie Walker Master’s Ruby Reserve have been created, priced at £15,000 (US$19,600) per bottle.
The whisky will be presented in a handcrafted gold and red Baccarat crystal decanter.
As well as marking Beveridge’s 40th year in the whisky industry, this year also marks the 200th anniversary of Johnnie Walker.
Beveridge said: “Every whisky that has gone into the creation of this new expression holds a special place in my heart. I worked at each of these distilleries during various points of my career and the flavours and smells of those whiskies transport me back to very happy times throughout my career at Johnnie Walker.
“The ‘ghost’ whiskies from Cambus, Carsebridge and Pittyvaich bring layers of rich fruit flavour. We combined this with the flavours of dark chocolate, plums and cherries found in the wonderfully aged expressions of Royal Lochnagar, Glendullan and Cragganmore, and the soft aromatic sea salt notes of Talisker and Port Ellen, creating a beautiful, full-bodied whisky.”
Last May, Diageo was granted planning permission to build a flagship visitor centre for blended Scotch whisky Johnnie Walker in Edinburgh, Scotland.
