Founded by Karl J Schoen, The Perfect Fifth has launched four Scotch whiskies in total, including the Sherry-cask matured Highland Park 1987 and single grain whisky Cambus 1976. The bottler has also unveiled a 25-year-old Springbank 1993 and a 27-year-old Glen Scotia 1992.

A total of 185 bottles of The Perfect Fifth Highland Park 1987 have been released, priced at US$3,000 each. Bottled at 47.1% ABV, the whisky is said to have a “silky” palate offering flavours of “smoke and lightly oiled barley sugar, with some dark liquorice sweetness underlined with exotic fruit”.

Aged in a first-fill Sherry hogshead, The Perfect Fifth Springbank 1993 has been bottled at 52.3% ABV and carries an RRP of US$1,500. The Perfect Fifth has released 522 bottles of the whisky, which is said to have flavours of dried apricots and spiced pear.

The company has released 138 bottles of Cambus 1976, the oldest whisky from The Perfect Fifth. With an RRP of US$1,250, the single grain Scotch has been bottled at 57.6% ABV and is said to have flavours of “delicate oak, balanced with big spices”.

Finally, The Perfect Fifth Glen Scotia 1992 has been bottled at 45.9% ABV and priced at US$850 per bottle. The 27-year-old whisky is described as having a “juicy palate” with flavours of cocoa and light smoke.

Schoen said: “As one of the first independent bottlers in the US, we are in a position to seek out the gold among a multitude of single casks, and set high standards in our selection process.

“We pride ourselves on curating and selecting the finest single cask whisky that has remained hidden or has been forgotten about over time. So when you sample a bottle of whisky from The Perfect Fifth, you really are experiencing a piece of lost whisky history.”

All four whiskies will be available from retail stores across Los Angeles, and via request through The Perfect Fifth website.

Any chance that The Perfect Fifth will bottling anything other than $1,000+ whiskies? I’ve been a “fellow enthusiast” for nearly twenty five years, but now I’m priced out of the market entirely. At least the UK-based indies still have some reasonably priced bottlings – these Perfect Fifths are perhaps for “elite” enthusiasts only?

    Sad times.
