Spirits Europe calls for re-establishment of Parliamentary Intergroup

Trade body Spirits Europe has called for the re-establishment of the Parliamentary Intergroup on Wine, Spirits and Quality Foodstuffs to encourage “effective communication” with MEPs.

A total of 238 spirits have GI protection in Europe

The trade body argued that the intergroup allowed for an “enhanced understanding” of the cultural, traditional and economic importance of spirits among key decision-makers in the European Parliament.

Spirits Europe noted that there are 238 spirits registered as geographical indications (GIs) in the EU, including Scotch and Irish whiskies, Cognac, Brandy de Jerez, Polish vodka, ouzo and genever.

It stressed that the intergroup would be able to provide a forum to discuss and put forward “suitable” policies and practices for the industry, and allow producers to share information with key policy-makers in the European Parliament.

Spirits Europe also said that almost 100 MEPs had indicated their support for the Parliamentary Intergroup on Wines, Spirits and Quality Foodstuffs in recent weeks. A vote will take place this week, and Spirits Europe hopes it will result in the re-establishment of the intergroup.

Ulrich Adam, director general of Spirits Europe, said: “We encourage MEPs from all political groupings, sitting on all committees, and from across the Member States, to support the re-establishment of the Parliamentary Intergroup on Wines, Spirits and Quality Foodstuffs.”

Earlier this year, Spirits Europe launched a website to give consumers access to nutrition and ingredients information on all spirit drinks legally sold in the EU.
