Most expensive Brora Scotch sold at auction

A bottle of 40-year-old single malt Scotch whisky from closed distillery Brora has set a new auction record for the brand after a bottle sold for £54,450 (US$69,848) at auction yesterday (24 October).

Brora 40 Year Old 1972 Vintage has set a new auction record for the distillery

Brora distillery fell silent in 1983 but is due to come back into operation next year thanks to investment from Diageo.

The record-breaking Brora 40 Year Old 1972 Vintage was one of just 160 bottles from the distillery, and was originally priced at £6,995 when it was released.

The whisky was presented in a crystal decanter, encased in a handcrafted wooden case made by the Queen’s cabinet makers at NEJ Stevenson.

The Brora bottling was sold to an unknown bidder during Sotheby’s The Ultimate Whisky Collection Auction in London this week.

Other notable whiskies within the sale included a full set of Brora Annual Releases, which fetched £30,129 (US$38,620) under the hammer.

Jonny Fowle, Sotheby’s whisky expert, said: “This was one of the highlights sold in the Sotheby’s auction – the largest single collector whisky auction ever.

“With the 200th anniversary of Brora celebrated this year and the distillery’s opening next year, I have seen significant interest in Brora from collectors around the world as we look ahead to an exciting time for the distillery.”

Earlier this year, Diageo released a 40-year-old Brora to mark the Highland distillery’s 200th anniversary.

Diageo first revealed plans to revive the Brora and Port Ellen distilleries in 2017.

James Mackay, head of rare and collectible spirits at Diageo, said: “For many, Brora is considered a masterpiece of the whisky world due to the quality of its liquid and its extremely rare status. The distillery will enter a new era from next year when Brora’s historic stills will once again create spirit.”
