El Tinieblo launches $1m crowdfunding drive

Single origin mezcal brand El Tinieblo is hoping to raise up to US$1 million through crowdfunding in order grow the brand and its distribution across the US and Europe.

El Tinieblo International is hoping to raise between US$10,000 and US$1 million through crowdfunding

El Tinieblo has launched the funding drive through crowdfunding platform Start Engine, where it hopes to raise between US$10,000 and US$1m – so far the campaign has raised US$79,410.

The brand, which currently produces joven, reposado and añejo mezcals, will use the funds to secure additional distributors, build its sales team, launch campaigns to acquire new customers and develop its spirits inventory.

Brian Gale, co-founder and CEO of El Tinieblo International (ETI), said: “It is a good time to be in the mezcal business. Mezcal exports from Mexico were up 39% in 2017, making it one of the hottest categories in an already hot craft spirits market.

“In the communal spirit of mezcal, everyone, even with modest entry-level commitments, will have the chance to participate at the ground floor level through this offering.”

Sourced solely from Rancho El Tinieblo in the state of Tamaulipas, Mexico, El Tinieblo is currently available in Miami, Los Angeles, New York, Montreal and Mexico.

El Tinieblo hopes the crowdfunding offering will enable it to launch in Europe, South Africa and more US states by the end of 2019, with further expansion planned for the coming years.

Alfredo Pérez-Salinas Tijerina, CEO of brand owner Mezcales de Tamaulipas S de RMLI, said: “We are proud of the fact that using methods passed down through generations of my family, we hand-make our mezcal in our own distillery using agave from our land. All of which allows us to assure quality and meet demand as we grow.

“Taking the same approach to the global market, we recently formed ETI as a separate US-based entity to manage all our commercial endeavours outside of Mexico and share our special mezcal with the rest of the world.”

The El Tinieblo crowdfunding campaign requires a minimum investment of US$250 and the brand is offering a range of perks for larger investments, including having investors’ names inscribed on the distillery wall and bottles of rare and exclusive mezcals.
