The gin has been launched as part of a series of celebrations for the University of Leicester’s centenary in 2021. The name ‘1921’ honours the year the university enrolled its first students.

The 1921 gin is said to “fuse science and creativity” and was created under the guidance of Ed Gibson, head distiller of Leicestershire-based 45 West Distillers, which produces Burleighs Gin.

The new expression is made with ingredients from the university’s Botanic Garden in Oadby, including pepper, spices, chamomile, thyme, elderberry and orange.

“It was particularly interesting from a distiller’s point of view to see how the students approached the creation of their recipes, specifically the balance they each attempted to achieve between bold flavours and subtle undertones,” said Gibson.

“I then took the three best recipes forward to create a final product that reflects the unique approach we took, delivering a bold spice that is still wonderfully smooth and easy drinking.”

Richard Gornall, director of the University of Leicester Botanic Garden, said: “1921 really captures the essence of the Botanic Garden, and we are incredibly proud to launch the gin for the public to enjoy.

“It’s great that visitors will now be able to take home a flavour of summertime from the garden to enjoy year-round, wherever they are.

“We have such a wealth of expertise and resources in Leicestershire – from the university’s scientists, to our producers at 45 West Distillers, to the range of flavourings from the garden. Creating a gin seemed like a brilliant way to bring the three together.”

1921 gin is available to buy from the shop at 45 West Distillers, the 45 Gin School and at 45 St Martin’s in Leicester. The gin is also available to buy online at Burleighs Gin for £35 (US$44.50) per 700ml.
