Tamnavulin Sherry Cask Edition goes on sale

7th May, 2019 by Melita Kiely

Speyside distillery Tamnavulin has added a single malt matured in three different types of Sherry casks to its portfolio.

Tamnavulin Sherry Cask Edition has been aged in three different oloroso Sherry casks

Tamnavulin Sherry Cask Edition was first aged in American white oak barrels before being transferred into three different types of oloroso Sherry casks, featuring a mix of European and American hogsheads.

The whisky is said to have flavours of glazed nectarines, frangipane, fruit cake and ripe apricots.

Bottled at 40% abv, the expression is available to buy from Tesco supermarket stores in the UK, exclusively in a one-litre format priced at £45 (US$59).

A 700ml format will launch in numerous supermarket stores throughout the UK in the second half of 2019 for an RRP of £32 (US$42).

This was on an introductory offer in Tesco, £30 for a litre, which seemed a great deal (equivalent to £21 for 70cl). Unfortunately the first pour reeked of sulphur, which is only going to get worse as the contents oxidise after opening. The palate was otherwise acceptable with little in the way of youthful harshness, which is common with NAS releases, so it is a shame. I can’t recall the last time I came across a badly sulphured release and had assumed producers were being more careful these days. Poor show!

  2. I don’t claim to be a whisky buff, but I know what I like. I recently bought a 1L bottle of Tamnavulin Sherry Cask Edition from Tesco at £30, which I thought was a super deal. I had never had it before and it was the price that swung me. I also particularly enjoy sherry finished whiskies. It was probably the most enjoyable whisky that I have tasted. I did not get any unpleasant odour of sulphur. I am desperate to get more but it is no longer available at Tesco. I see that Amazon have 70cl bottles at a reasonable price which I will go for.
