Whyte & Mackay unveils ‘experimental’ Whisky Works

Glasgow-based Whyte & Mackay has revealed a new range of “experimental” Scotch whiskies under an independent division, called The Whisky Works.

Whyte & Mackay’s Gregg Glass has led The Whisky Works project

Led independently by Whyte & Mackay whisky maker Gregg Glass, The Whisky Works will launch with two limited edition expressions: The 29 Year Old Glaswegian and King of Trees.

The 29-year-old bottling is described as a “classic” whisky and has been sourced from a silent grain distillery.

The single grain has been aged in American white oak casks in a traditional dunnage warehouse. It is said to have notes of butterscotch, custard, exotic fruit and crème brûlée.

Only 1,642 bottles The 29 Year Old Glaswegian have been created. The whisky has an abv of 54.2% and has been bottled at cask strength, without caramel colouring or chill filtration.

King of Trees is said to be a “modern” whisky, comprising a Highland blended malt that has been part-finished in native Scottish oak.

Tasting notes include apple, pear, vanilla and cinnamon. A total of 2,157 bottles will be released.

With an abv of 46.4%, King of Trees has also been bottled without added colouring or chill filtration.

King of Trees will retail for RRP £75 (US$99) per 700ml bottle, while The 29 Year Old Glaswegian will be priced at £130 (US$172).

Both bottlings will be available from Whisky Live on 29 March, and then exclusively via The Whisky Exchange for two weeks.

Glass said: “Whisky making is a true passion of mine. Along the way I have been fortunate to develop relationships with brilliant producers connected right along the whisky-making process right back to the individual foresters that manage the woodland that produces our casks.

“The Whisky Works is a fantastic opportunity to celebrate what can be achieved in the production of a Scotch whisky.”
