Loomes has been re-elected for a two-year term of the ABFI, which represents 49 drinks manufacturers and suppliers from across Ireland.

Loomes said: “The drinks industry is an important Irish industry, with innovation at its core. From the Irish whiskey renaissance, to the increasing number of beer options available for consumers, it’s an exciting and dynamic industry, with strong prospects.

“There are also a number of challenges facing the industry, including Brexit, threats of international trade wars, our high rate of excise tax, and the impact of the Public Health (Alcohol) Act.

“I look forward to working with the ABFI team and membership to navigate these challenges and opportunities over the next two years.”

Under the ABFI umbrella are the Irish Brewers Association, Irish Cider Association, Irish Spirits Association, Irish Whiskey Association and Irish Wine Association.

Patricia Callan, director of ABFI, said: “I would like to congratulate Oliver Loomes on his appointment as chair of ABFI. I look forward to continuing to work with him on the issues that are pertinent to the drinks industry in Ireland.”

The drinks industry in Ireland employs 90,000 people and exports more than €1.25 billion worth of produce every year.
