Monkey 47 adds red mustard cress to Distiller’s Cut

German gin brand Monkey 47 has unveiled its 2018 Distiller’s Cut, which has been made with red mustard cress grown 33 metres below the streets of London.

To source the red mustard cress for the expression, the Pernod Ricard-owned gin brand travelled to Growing Underground, a London-based botanist growing crops in an access tunnel more than 30 metres below the streets of Clapham.

To create the 2018 Distiller’s Cut, red mustard cress leaves were added to a macerate containing the 47 ingredients found in the brand’s core expression.

The botanicals were then distilled again in a second extraction procedure, left to mature for three months in earthenware containers, and finally combined with local spring water.

The 2018 Distiller’s Cut is described as being a “piquant, yet elegant dry gin with delicate green top notes”.

Just 4,000 bottles of the expression have been produced, each at 47% abv.

Monkey 47 Distiller’s Cut will be available in the on-trade and high-end retail outlets from October 2018 carrying an RRP of £77 (US$100).

Previous iterations of the brand’s Distiller’s Cut have included botanicals such as purple shamrock and rare spignel plant.
