Irn Bru and Bovril feature in British cocktail list
Supermarket chain Sainsbury’s has partnered with London Cocktail Club (LCC) to create a drinks menu inspired by the UK’s favourite flavours.
The cocktail list includes drinks to honour Birmingham, Manchester, Edinburgh, Bristol and the UK
The five cocktail recipes pay tribute to some of the UK’s major cities and incorporate flavours voted by the residents themselves. Cocktails have been created to represent Edinburgh, Bristol, Birmingham and Manchester.
JJ Goodman, founder of LCC, said: “We had a lot of fun creating cocktails which represent these great cities; the key for me was to keep the drinks simple, but also creatively interesting so they cannot only be re-created at home but also feel like taste of home.
“Sainsbury’s has done a great job with their new range of cocktail ingredients, which help to keep the cost down when experimenting in mixology and I hope this encourages more people to get inventive with their creations.”
The list coincides with the launch of Sainsbury’s new 35cl and 20cl cocktail ingredients, which are designed to make cocktails at home more accessible and affordable.
Drinks created by Sainsbury’s and LCC include the Edinburgh Irn Punch, which combines Edinburgh’s two favourite flavours of Scotch whisky and Irn Bru; and the Bristolian SideBoat, which aims to capture the fresh and historical nature of the city.
For the Brummie Sweet Spice, LCC aimed to honour the Birmingham-born Balti while paying homage to Cadbury’s Bournville factory; and the Rock My Manchester cocktail includes the local delicacy of chips and gravy accompanied by a swig of beer.
Finally, Sainsbury’s and LCC created the Great British G&Tea as the ‘ultimate Great British Cocktail’. This creation was born from the nation’s love of English breakfast tea and combines it with London Dry gin, cassis liqueur and spoonful of blackcurrant jam.
