Diageo pairs pre-mixed cans with edible straws

Johnnie Walker owner Diageo is increasing its commitment to cut down on single-use plastic straws with the introduction of edible flavoured versions to complement its pre-mixed range.

Diageo has released a selection of edible straws to complement its pre-mixed range

The world’s largest spirits producer has paired different flavoured straws with a range of its pre-mixed cans to make consumers’ “#tinning moments even more special”.

The range includes: a strawberry straw to accompany Pimm’s and Lemonade; a lime straw for Gordon’s Gin and Schweppes Tonic; a chocolate-flavoured straw for Baileys and Iced Coffee Latte; a lemon straw for Captain Morgan Spiced Rum and Cola; and a lime straw for Smirnoff and Cranberry.

The pre-mixed range and edible straws can be purchased from 31dover.com/tinning.

Diageo isn’t the first group to explore the use of edible straws. Pernod Ricard, which owns Absolut Vodka and Chivas Regal blended Scotch, partnered with edible plastics company Loliware in April to create the “straw of the future”.

This year, the drinks industry has ramped up its efforts to cut down on single-use, plastic straws this year, with Diageo pledging to phase out all plastic straws and stirrers across its offices, events, promotions, advertising and marketing globally in January 2018.

The Scotch Whisky Association (SWA) also took a stand against plastic straws at the start of the year in a bid to cut down its impact on the environment.

Last month, Bacardi partnered with environmental charity Lonely Whale in an effort to remove one billion plastic straws by 2020.
