Macallan unveils M Black and Edition No. 4
Edrington has released two new expressions under its single malt Scotch brand The Macallan: Edition No. 4 and The Macallan M Black 2017.
The Macallan M Black 2017 and Edition No. 4
The Macallan M Black 2017 follows five annual releases of M since 2013. Edrington collaborated with creative director Fabien Baron and Lalique to create the crystal decanter, which was crafted to “reflect the diverse history” of The Macallan.
Bottled at 45% abv, the expression has a “rich natural” colour, as a result of the Sherry-seasoned oak casks.
It has notes of “dark fruit, chocolate and espresso, which open into wood spice and an edge of peat”. The nose has a “rich cherry chocolate sweetness and fresh citrus notes”.
The six sharp angular facets in the design pay homage to The Macallan’s heritage.
Geoff Kirk, director of prestige for The Macallan, said: “Presented in an extraordinary handcrafted black crystal decanter, M Black reflects a lifetime of whisky and continues to showcase the vital influence of The Macallan’s exceptional oak casks and the ultimate craft of whisky making evident through the entire M range. M Black is a true work of art which raises the bar for whisky decanters around the world.”
Limited to 725 decanters, each engraved with individual numbers, M Black is priced at £5,400 (US$7,192) for 700ml.
The new Edition No. 4 is the fourth release in the Edition Series, a range of whiskies that focus on The Macallan’s commitment to wood.
Edition No. 1 and Edition No. 2 highlighted the influence each cask has on the taste and flavour of the final whisky, while Edition No. 3 focused on aroma.
Edition No. 4 is described as revealing the “structure of the whisky” and takes inspiration from the construction of the new £140m distillery.
Bottled at 48.4% abv, the expression “exposes” the role of each cask during the whisky-making process.
Crafted from a combination of European and American oak casks, Edition No. 4 is described as a “zesty, vibrant and invigorating” single malt with notes of rounded honey, sweet toffee and citrus fruits.
The Macallan Edition No. 4 is priced at £82.00 (US$109.00) and available worldwide from July 2018.
