Columbia Room unveils cocktail mixed with sound
Washington DC-based cocktail bar Columbia Room has launched its latest tasting menu, which includes a Punch cocktail stirred using sound.
Columbia Room’s new menu features a punch style cocktail ‘stirred using sound’
The new menu, called Spectrum, aims to challenge guests’ perceptions of what a cocktail should be, and has been inspired by the sounds, colours and flavours of food and drink.
Drinks on the menu include Sound, which the bar claims is the first drink stirred using sound. It is a Punch-style cocktail presented in a large bowl that is stirred on the outer surface, like a ‘singing bowl’ musical instrument.
The stirring induces vibrations that pass through the drink, causing it to swirl inside the vessel.
JP Fetherston, beverage director at Columbia Room, said: “What really drew me to the idea of ‘spectrum’ as a menu was the thrill and the challenge of conveying complex ideas like cymatics [sound vibrations] and the colour spectrum through our drinks and dishes, in an understated way.”
The menu also features Pick a Colour, which allows drinkers to choose their drink based on colour alone; and Time, which offers guests the chance to choose between younger and older cocktails made from Cognac, Madeira, tea cordial, and beeswax of varying ages.
The Spectrum menu launched in March and will be available at the tasting room until June.
At Tales of the Cocktail’s Spirited Awards in 2017, Columbia Room was named Best American Cocktail Bar.
