Texans buy more spirits than other American drinkers

Drinkers in Austin and Houston, Texas, order more spirits compared to other American cities, according to research from alcohol delivery service Drizly.

Drizly is the largest online alcohol marketplace in the US

US-based Drizly analysed consumer spending habits in 12 different American cities, and found that spirits account for 49.6% of sales in Austin, and 47.5% in Houston – more than any other city in the study.

At the opposite end of the spectrum, just 28.2% of orders in Boston and 30.9% of sales in Denver were for spirits.

Drizly, which also sells wine and beer, found that spirits outsold wine in Austin, Houston, Seattle and Tampa bay.

When the orders from each city were broken down into different spirit categories, Drizly found that whiskey was the most popular spirit in a greater number of cities, making up 44.3% of sales in Seattle and 45.9% of sales in Chicago.

However, when investigating the most popular spirit brand in each city, vodka came out on top. Tito’s Handmade Vodka was named the most popular liquor brand in every city in the study, except Seattle where Bulleit Bourbon claimed the title.

Drizly also investigated the amount spent on alcohol in each city, discovering the average cost for a bottle of spirit and the average order cost in each city.

The study found that spirits were the most expensive in New York, costing US$41 on average for a 750ml bottle of spirit, while the average cost was US$24 in Tampa Bay – also the city with the lowest average order cost.

The average total order cost in Tampa Bay was US$61, while Seattle claimed the top spot with a spending average of US$83.

The figures follow a report published earlier this week that showed online alcohol sales in America reached US$1.7 billion dollars last year.
