Mackmyra finishes single malt in Italian wine casks

Sweden’s Mackmyra distillery has launched its latest seasonal single malt whisky, Skördetid, which has spent six months finishing in Italian Masi Costasera Amarone casks.

Skördetid is the result of Mackmyra’s collaboration with Masi

Skördetid, which is the Swedish for “harvest time”, is the product of a collaboration between Mackmyra and Italian wine producer Masi.

The whisky was originally matured in Sweden in traditional Mackmyra casks. A “high proportion” then spent a further six months in Masi’s 600-litre oak barrels.

The expression’s aroma is described as “spicy, fruity and herbal with warm vinous grape notes and a slightly mineral tone”. It is said to have a creamy mouthfeel and on the palate, Mackmyra suggests, raisins, dried pears, ginger and vanilla. The finish has notes of warm raisins and oak.

The packaging pays homage to the dark red of Masi Costasera Amarone wine.

Chairman of the board at Mackmyra, Carl Klingberg, said: “When I visited the Italian wine producer Masi one winter, I felt immediately that here was a company whose values and methods matched Mackmyra’s.

“It wasn’t hard to sell the idea of creating a whisky with an Amarone finish to our master blender, Angela D’Orazio, who has Italian ancestry.”

Raffaele Boscaini, of Masi Technical Group, added: “It is fascinating to see how our casks, where for a long period Masi Costasera has been aged, have transferred their character and specific aromas from our unique wine to another unique product.”

Skördetid is bottled at 46.1% abv and will be available as a limited edition from the Swedish liquor store chain Systembolaget and selected export markets.
