Hottest bar openings in February 2017

London led the way in last month’s hottest new openings, introducing an intimate subterranean cocktail bar, an all-day drinking den and a sultry pan-Asian watering hole.

Elsewhere in the world there are gems to be uncovered; a beer pong bar opened in Hong Kong, and in San Francisco a new “bar within a bar” concept launched a quarterly-changing, reservation-only tasting menu.

In Los Angeles an array of new drinking dens sprung up – including a boozy beer bar from Danish beer brand Mikkeller, and a neighbourhood Italian haunt headed up by award-winning bartender Ryan Wainwright.

The Hyde, London

The Georgian-style public bar at this Paddington townhouse hotel is a cosy spot for cocktails including The Hyde’s signature drink – a combination of calvados, homemade salted butter hazelnut liqueur, Dubonnet and Laurent Perrier Champagne. The bar also offers a unique and exclusive afternoon tea experience with chic selections on the menu, as well as a selection of small plates curated by head chef Matt McKiernan.

The Ponte, Los Angeles

LA restaurateur Stephane Bombet has teamed up with chef Scott Conant (of New York-based restaurant Scarpetta) to open contemporary Italian restaurant The Ponte. The bar team is headed by bartender Ryan Wainwright, who has created an impressive cocktail list with a strong focus on Negronis, spritzers and sours.

Hawkers Bar & Brasserie, London

This 160-cover restaurant and bar in Kingston-upon-Thames offers all-day neighbourhood drinking and dining with interiors inspired by the area’s local aviation history. The stand-alone lounge bar stocks a comprehensive range of premium cocktails and spirits including gin from local distillery Beckett’s, craft beers from local breweries and a thoughtfully-sourced wine list.

Carnival, Hong Kong

Situated in Hong Kong’s Tsim Sha Tsui, Carnival is a new beer pong bar where guests can enjoy fun and games including dart machines, beer pong tables and Slap Cup tables. Creative and insta-worthy cocktails enhance the funfair ambience, and include My Little Pony, comprising sake, Crème de Framboise, Monin Rose, half and half, yuzu mix and cotton candy; and Merry Poppins, which contains Stoli Vodka, fresh raspberries, lime, Crème de Framboise, tonic and popping candy.

TT Liquor, London

The multi-faceted venue set across three floors boasts a specialist liquor store and an intimate subterranean cocktail bar, focussing on tasting experiences.  The bar showcases important eras through the history of cocktails with the menu comprising of four different ‘journeys’ each including four cocktails embodying a dedicated era. Cocktails are accompanied by small plates of food, selected to complement the specific characteristics of each drink.

Mikkeler, Los Angeles

Danish beer brand Mikkeller has opened its latest hop-geek bar in Los Angeles in a massive former auto-repair shop. Its beer offering includes 40 taps from the best breweries in the world, two cask handles, specialised bottle selection and exclusive house beers. There’s also a decent food menu, with tri-tip pastrami sandwiches and larger plates like sea bream with mussels.

Miusan, London

A new temple devoted to drinking and Pan-Asian dining has arrived in Camden Town. Miusan is a sultry pan-Asian bar and restaurant by Camden tube station. Playfully modelled on the chic and opulent 1940s opium dens of New York and Paris, Miusan is set over three floors including a ground floor bar and dining area, dance floor and a mezzanine private hire. Cocktails created with fresh and fiery Asian ingredients include Lau’s Den  – Absolut vodka, sake, coconut cream, passion-fruit and lychee juice – and Shanghai Alley, made with Reposado Tequila, maraschino cherry syrup, rice syrup, fresh grapefruit and fresh lime.

 

Over Proof, San Francisco

Located within San Francisco’s ABV bar, this “bar within a bar” offers a quarterly-changing, reservation-only tasting menu. The concept at Over Proof – including menus and décor – will change every three months, focussing on drinks made with one type of spirit, accompanied by food from the region(s) where the spirit is made.

Borderline, London

The iconic live music venue in London’s Soho has officially reopened after closing for refurbishment. The new Borderline will have a sleek new layout and design, and a new live music and nightlife programme. A new cocktail lounge area, tucked away in the corner of the venue features striking brushed brass fittings and surfaces, muted by rich burgundy and teal textures on the walls and soft furnishings.
