French rum inspired by submarines launches
Family-owned spirits supplier Biggar & Leith has unveiled Spytail Black Ginger Rum – a super-premium expression created in celebration of pioneering deep sea explorers.
Spytail is distilled in the Caribbean and then aged, spiced and blended in Cognac, France
Spytail is based on a 19th century French recipe of ageing Caribbean rum with fresh ginger and spices in the barrel.
The rum is distilled in the Caribbean and then aged, spiced and blended at a small family distillery in Cognac, France.
Its name, Spytail, is inspired by the “legendary submarines of the old”.
The bottle’s round shape is based on a Bathysphere (a primitive form of submarine) and has a porthole embossed on the front and back. Hidden within it are the co-ordinates of the final resting place of Jules Vernes.
The navy blue and orange striped label, based on a French Naval signal flag, is adorned with engineering details from original submarine designs. The heavy stopper is crafted from metal and embossed with the words ‘Voyages Extraordinaires’ – a nod to underwater adventurers.
“The heritage of Spytail, stand out packaging, French craftsmanship and expert rum blending have resulted in an exceptional product that brings something very exciting and new to the burgeoning super-premium rum category.
“Also, we’re seeing that ginger is becoming a seriously popular flavour among cocktail consumers – Moscow Mules, Dark & Stormy and premium ginger beer are all booming and we think that a delicious Black Ginger Rum is going to fit right in. “We can’t wait to get Spytail out to thirsty drinkers and look forward to shipping it to ports around the world,” said Elwyn Gladstone, founder of Biggar & Leith.
Spytail is bottled at 40-42% abv and is available in the US at an RRP of US$21.99-$23.99 for 750ml bottle. It is also available internationally in bars and stores.
