Strathearn Distillery unveils honeyberry gin
Perthshire-based Strathearn Distillery, one of the smallest distilleries in Scotland, has developed the “world’s first” honeyberry gin.
Honeyberry Gin is said to be light and juniper-led with a berry flavour that lingers
The unique spirit will be released in small batches of 500, with the first batch launching today (12 September).
Made from honeyberries, the crop has been hailed as a superfruit due to its high levels of health-giving nutrients, which farmer Stewart Arkuckle grows on his farm in Angus. The taste is said to be light and juniper-led with a berry flavour which lingers.
Unlike many flavoured gins, the honeyberry gin remains a potent spirit at 40% abv and is a light magenta.
The honeyberry is native to Russia and very tolerant of cold weather, making it ideally suited to the Scottish climate.
Tony Reeman-Clark, founder of Strathearn Distillery, said: “I met Stewart Arbuckle through the Scottish Craft Distillers Association. When he mentioned that he was starting to grow honeyberries, I instantly knew that it would make for the perfect gin.
“Honeyberries are the next big thing in the world of berries and act as a unique gin botanical. We’re pleased to launch another world’s first here at Strathearn.”
The distillery aims to launch wine, fizz, liqueurs and port-style beverages made from honeyberries in a couple of years.
Last month, the distillery announced it would hold an auction of its first bottled whiskies through online site Whisky Auctioneer to coincide with its third birthday.
