Hybrid Scotch-Japanese whisky range expands
Adelphi Distillery has created the third age statement expression in a range of hybrid Scotch and Japanese whiskies, featuring rare liquid from Japan’s Hanyu Distillery.
The Glover is a range of hybrid whiskies created using liquid from Scottish and Japanese distilleries
The Glover 18 follows the launch of The Glover 22 and The Glover 14 in October last year, which sold out “almost immediately”.
The range, blended at the Adelphi Distillery in collaboration with Edinburgh-based TBG & Co Ltd and created with input from whisky expert Charles MacLean, pays homage to 19th century industrialist Thomas Blake Glover.
Glover, known as the “Scottish Samurai”, was born on Fraserburgh, Scotland, in 1838 and went on to help lead Japan’s industrial development in the 19th century. He was the first foreigner to receive the Order of the Rising Sun from the Japanese Emperor in recognition of his achievements.
As such, The Glover whisky series also celebrates “the long history of trade and friendship between Scotland and Japan”. Jim Millar, a senior parliamentary adviser at Holyrood and director of TBG & Co, spearheaded the range.
“The Glover whiskies are a celebration of Scotland’s influence and its international friendships,” he said. “They honour the achievements of Thomas Blake Glover and celebrate our important relationship with Japan, which continues to flourish, especially in the fields of trade, culture and education.”
To create the range, Adelphi Distillery used whisky from Scotland’s Longmorn and Glen Garioch distilleries, as well as “rare” whisky from the Hanyu distillery in Japan.
TBG & Co Ltd said it has already received a “very promising” number of orders for The Glover 18 ahead of its international launch.
“It’s clear there’s a strong market for these types of premium fusions between Scotch whisky and international whisky, which have their own unique character,” said David Moore, also director at TBG & Co.
TBG & Co is planning to create more history-inspired Scotch hybrids in the future and is looking to partner with international single malt distilleries.
“Creating international fusions is not without its challenges, but the rewards are clearly there for people to see and taste,” added Moore. “These whiskies are a celebration of Scotland’s internationalism, of its positive influence on other countries, of partnerships that reach across physical borders.”
Just 1,448 bottles of The Glover 18 have been created. Bottled at 48.6% abv, the whisky carries an RRP of £145.00.
