Amarula intros virtual reality concept

Distell-owned, South Africa-made liqueur brand Amarula has launched an immersive virtual reality concept to give consumers a “tour of the African continent”.

Developed by South African firms FCB Cape Town and Deep VR, the immersive, Oculus-style 3D 360-degree experience features Africa’s open spaces, wildlife, people, cities and culture.

Named Made from Africa, it took two weeks for teams to capture the footage for the VR experience using in-house designed camera systems.

“The VR experience brings to life Amarula’s ‘Made from Africa’ story through a fully engaging and immersive 360-degree journey, offering insight into Africa’s natural and cultural wonders,” said Mncedisi Junior Jekwa, Amarula global marketing manager.

“Viewers will get to experience the story of the brand and how it is truly made from Africa; from the marula trees growing wild, to the maturation houses and eventual product experience – each scene offers the consumers a step in the Amarula brand story and the Amarula process.

“As our new bottle rolls out across travel retail and other international markets, people will be able to experience the first true virtual reality experience to come from Africa.”

The Made from Africa launch follows both the launch of the new Jabulaini bottle design, and the appointment of Dr Paula Kahumbu, conservationist and Wildlife Direct CEO, as a global ambassador for the Amarula Trust.

A 2D 360-degree version of Made in Africa is available on the brand’s Facebook and Youtube channels now.

Amarula as a brand supports elephant conservation, so the majestic animals had to feature in the VR tour.

Viewers can also take a hot air balloon tour over the landscape as part of the VR viewing.

In addition to its landscapes and wildlife, Made From Africa is also a celebration of the continent’s people.

The VR tour details Amarula production, including a trip into the brand’s warehouse.
