The Balvenie unveils third batch of Tun 1509

William Grant & Sons has unveiled the latest batch of The Balvenie Tun 1509 range – a no-age-statement expression consisting of liquid from 31 different casks.

The third batch of The Balvenie Tun 1509 contains liquid from 31 different hand-selected casks

Following the release of the first and second batches of The Balvenie Tun 1509, the third batch in the range has been hand-selected by The Balvenie malt master David Stewart.

Batch three contains whisky from 12 Sherry butts distilled between 1989 and 1992, 11 American oak hogsheads distilled in 1989 and eight refill American Oak butts distilled in 1992 and 1993.

In line the rest of the 1509 range, this liquid was transferred to a marrying vessel in Warehouse 24 for a period of several months.

“We have been overwhelmed by the positive reception and recognition that Batches 1 and 2 of Tun 1509 have received from the industry,” said Stewart, who was named MBE in January this year.

“We hope this limited release of Batch 3 will be received in a similar fashion as it possesses those familiar Balvenie characteristics that made previous batches so popular.”

“Utilising my knowledge of our whisky stocks and the process of marrying the different cask together, we have created a whisky of rich complexity with elegant oaky notes and dried fruits balanced by mellow cinnamon spices and ginger. It also has lovely layers of vanilla oak, rich woody spices, dark fruits and a definite sherry character interspersed with elegant honey.”

Just 8,850 bottles of The Balvenie Tun 1509 Batch Three (52.2% abv) will be available from 1 July at an RRP of £260.

In 2014, brand-owner William Grant & Sons discontinued its successful The Balvenie Tun 1401 series and replaced it with Tun 1509 in order to increases capacity for the range.

Tun 1509 was specially built to hold four times as much liquid as Tun 1401.
