Scapa releases commemorative Jutland bottling

Orcadian distillery Scapa has released Scapa Jutland, a single cask Scotch whisky bottling, to mark the centenary of the Battle of Jutland and raise funds for the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI).

RNLI Lifeboatcrew Graham Campbell and Nicola Stevenson, Scapa Distillery Visitor Manager present Scapa Jutland

Scapa Jutland was produced in association with the family of Admiral John Rushworth Jellicoe, with the liquid matured for 16 years in a single first-fill American oak cask. According to Brian MacAulay, Scapa master distiller, nosing and tasting notes include tropical fruit, vanilla, toffee and butterscotch.

The Chivas Brothers-owned distillery will donate all profits from Scapa Jutland sales, estimated to reach more than £45,000, to the RNLI.

Scapa was used as a base by the British naval fleet during the First World War. The Battle of Jutland took place from 31 May-1 June 1916, and was the largest naval battle in the war. Ships from Orkney, led by Jellicoe, fought the German Navy. More than 6,000 people were killed in the battle.

Chivas Brothers has released 249 bottles of Scapa Jutland, with 11 named in memory of ships from the British and German Navies that fought during the conflict, including HMS Invincible, HMS Queen Mary and HMS Collingwood.

HMS Indefatigable will be placed up for auction through Master of Malt to raise further funds for the RNLI.

MacAulay said: “We are thrilled to present Scapa Jutland, a true Orcadian single malt that has been crafted using traditional methods and thoughtfully matured for 16 years in a single first-fill American oak cask.

“Bursting with sweet, tropical fruit flavours and notes of vanilla, toffee and butterscotch, the single cask expression is harmoniously balanced with a long, sweet and spicy finish and is a fitting tribute to the commemorations here on Orkney.”

The Scapa Jutland release is exclusively available from the Scapa Visitor Centre, priced at £200 for a 70cl bottle.
