Pickering’s launches Scottish oak-aged gin range

Craft distiller Pickering’s Gin has launched a collection of gins matured in single malt whisky casks from distilleries in five of Scotland’s whisky regions.

Founders Marcus Pickering and Matt Gammell hand-selected barrels from Islay, Speyside, the Lowlands, Islands and the Highlands, before transporting them to Pickering’s Edinburgh-based Summerhall Distillery to be filled with batches of the brand’s cask strength gin.

The gin is aged in one cask from each of the five regions at a time, lasting between three and six months for each expression, with each yielding just 200 bottles.

The release is said to be the first time a gin distillery has launched a collection of five oak aged gins.

Lowland Cask Aged Gin is said to offer a citric aroma with notes of tobacco, herbs, fruit and lemon on the palate, while the Speyside edition boasts a “mossy” nose with vanilla, caramel, boiled sweets and “a woody, vegetal quality”.

Island Cask Aged Gin offers an aroma of toffee, vanilla and dried peat; “slightly salty with a subtle smoky dimension” on the palate, while the Islay offers “mild sweetness and toffee” on the nose with a palate of “fragrant, herbal notes and a maritime saltiness”

Highland Cask Aged Gin has a varied nose – “mossy, woody with a hint of pepper”, along with fudge and boiled lemon sweets, and on the palate notes of apricot, raisin, wood and vanilla.

Pickering’s co-founder Matt Gammell said: “As distillers we wanted to take people on a journey exploring both gin and whisky, and to truly test the versatility of Pickering’s Gin.

“With gin, there’s endless pleasure to be had experimenting with new flavours, serves and cocktails. Our latest offering of oak aged gin is truly a different way to experience gin, and to explore the world of Scotch whisky for spirit lovers the world over.”

Pickering’s suggests enjoying each expression like a whisky using water or ice, or savoured in cocktails.

Pickering’s Oak Aged Gin is available at £36 for a 350ml bottle online at www.pickeringsgin.com or directly from the Summerhall Distillery in Edinburgh.
