Walsh Whiskey Distillery to open in June 2016

Walsh Whiskey Distillery has commenced production at its new €25 million site in Royal Oak, County Carlow, and will hold an official opening ceremony in June 2016.

Production has started production at the new Walsh Whiskey Distillery

The group’s first batch of new make spirit was created its newly commissioned distillery on Easter Sunday (27 March) under the direction of distillery manager Aidan Finnegan

An official opening ceremony will take place on 21 June.

The distillery has capacity to produce 650,000 cases, or eight million bottles, annually and will distill the company’s Writer’s Tears and The Irishman Irish whiskey brands.

It will create three styles of Irish whiskey – grain, single malt, and single pot still.

Bernard Walsh, CEO of Walsh Whiskey Distillery, said: “This is a first for Irish whiskey – to distill all three styles of whiskey in the one still room. So our columns are for grain whiskey, we have the pots here that will distill our malt whiskey and then we’ll do campaigns of pot still whiskey as well.

“It’s very exciting to be able to do it all under the one roof, in the one room.”

Last year, Walsh told The Spirits Business that following the opening of the new distillery, he hopes to secure distribution for Writer’s Tears and The Irishman in at least an additional 34 markets around the world.

Construction of the new €25 million Walsh Whiskey Distillery, located on an 18th century estate in Royal Oak, began in 2014 as part of an expanded partnership with Italian firm Illva Saronno.
