Bonhams HK to sell 100-year-old Rémy Martin

Auction house Bonhams Hong Kong is readying to host its Fine Wine, Whisky and Cognac Sale, which will include a Rémy Martin Cognac aged for more than a century and 50-year-old Karuizawa Japanese whisky.

The magnum of Rémy Martin’s Louis XIII Black Pearl, bottled in a Baccarat crystal decanter and numbered 75 of 358, is estimated to fetch HK$350,000-HK$450,000.

A “highly desirable” bottle of Karuizawa 1963, aged for 53 years, is estimated to fetch HK$200,000-HK$280,000, while a pair of 45-year-old Karuizawa Water for Life whiskies have been given a pre-sale valuation of HK$150,000-HK$190,000.

A large selection of single cask Japanese whisky from the Yamazaki distillery will also feature, as well as a bottle of Hanyu Ichiro’s Ace of Spades, which is estimated at HK$80,000-HK$110,000.

One bottle of The Macallan Lalique 57-year-old Scotch whisky, numbered 17 of 400, has an estimate of HK$210,000-HK$250,000.

In total, the sale consists of more than 600 lots: 380 wine, 230 whisky and the remainder Cognac and Japanese sake.

“For our May sale we have a very strong selection in all categories,” said Daniel Lam, whisky and wine specialist at Bonhams Hong Kong. “Old bottlings of Karuizawa are very much in demand and we have more than 20 bottles on offer.

“The Louis XIII Black Pearl is a particular highlight that has sold very well at previous auctions and very successfully in the past and I am expecting great interest in the 2005 Bordeaux.”

The auction will take place Bonhams Hong Kong, Suite 2001, One Pacific Place, 88 Queensway, Admiralty on 20 May at 5pm.

In November last year, Bonhams New York brought back its Fine and Rare Wine and Whisky auction more than one year after suspending all whisky sales due to concerns over “profitability”.
