Buffalo Trace releases seasoned wood-aged Bourbon

Buffalo Trace Distillery has continued its homage to former Distillery owner Colonel E. H. Taylor, Jr. with its latest release, a Bourbon whiskey aged in seasoned oak barrels.

The barrels used to create the expression underwent a variety of seasoning processes before they were filled

The barrels used to create the expression, called Colonel E. H. Taylor, Jr. Seasoned Wood Bourbon Whiskey, underwent a variety of seasoning processes at Independent Stave Company, who consulted on this project with oak maturation expert Dr. James Swan.

One set of staves were immersed in an enzyme-rich bath with water heated to 100 degrees, before they were placed into kilns and dried until they reached the appropriate humidity level for crafting into barrels.

Other staves were seasoned outdoors for six months, and a further selection were left outdoors for 12 months before they were made into barrels and filled with small batch wheat recipe Bourbon.

The expression, aged for “well over a decade”, offers “a delicate aroma of caramel and dried fruit, followed by a bright and pleasant first sip”. On the palate, “oak tannins are balanced by a touch of butterscotch, almond, citrus notes, and hint of spicy clove”.

The variant is the eighth release in the collection of E. H. Taylor, Jr. whiskeys, and is presented in a canister reminiscent of Taylor’s whiskey package dating more than 100 years ago.

Six bottle cases will be shipped in a wooden box modelled on the wooden crates used by Taylor to transport goods during the days before Prohibition.

Colonel Edmund Haynes Taylor, Jr.  is considered to be one of the “founding fathers” of the Bourbon industry, and pushed for the passage of the Bottled-in-Bond Act of 1897.

After purchasing the distillery known today as Buffalo Trace Distillery, Taylor implemented several innovative production methods which are still used by the company, including climate controlled ageing warehouses.

Bottled-in-Bond at 50% abv, Colonel E.H. Taylor, Jr. Seasoned Wood Bourbon Whiskey will be available from late March at an RRP of US$69.99 per 750ml bottle.

Last year Buffalo Trace Distillery shattered its previous visitors’ record boasting an 18% leap in numbers during 2015.
