The Macallan sets new TR record with $360k sale

A collection of 19 bottles of The Macallan Scotch whisky has sold at Dubai International airport for US$361,000, setting a new travel retail world record.

Le Clos has set a new travel retail world record after a collection of The Macallan sold for US$361,000

The sale took place at Dubai-based wine and spirits retailer Le Clos and included 19 vintage expressions The Macallan’s Fine and Rare Collection dating from 1938 to 1974 – some of which were part of releases comprising fewer than 100 bottles.

“We are delighted that buyers trust and choose Le Clos to purchase such wonderful and rare products like The Macallan,” said Marek Sheridan, managing director at Le Clos.

“Our extensive range and ability to delight customers with world class experiences is testament to our powerful collaborations with valued partners such as The Macallan and we look forward to sharing even greater successes as we expand the Le Clos footprint of outlets.”

The latest record-breaking sale follows a previous record purchase in 2014 when a Chinese customer purchased The Macallan Lalique and various other 50-year-old malts for US$112,780.

“Our partnership with Le Clos has gone from strength to strength and this fantastic news is testament to this,” commented Ken Grier, global brand director of The Macallan. “They truly understand the value of The Macallan and those customers who seek highly collectable single malts.

“We are delighted to be part of their on-going success and look forward to continuing with this great relationship for the long term.”
